In the image above, you can see my 28-inch “Best Fashion Friend” Barbie wearing a handmade sweater and an argyle skirt with knife pleats. This Barbie is a lot of fun to sew for because she’s so big, like sewing for a little child!
To make this outfit, you’ll need cotton fabric for the skirt and sweater material for the shirt. The lining of the sweater is made with white flannel.
I recommend using size 4/0 Dritz snaps for the sweater’s closure area. I do not recommend using Velcro with sweater material or flannel.
Right now, there are not a lot of outfits available for these 28″ beauties. But, I’m here to help! With the free patterns and tutorials below, you’ll be sewing adorable outfits for your super-sized Barbies in no time!
- Free printable sewing patterns for 28 inch doll shirt or sweater in PDF downloadable pattern format
- Video showing how to make the shirt or sweater
- FREE PDF download of argyle skirt pattern with knife pleats
- Video showing how to make the skirt with knife pleats
A word to the wise: knife pleats are somewhat challenging because they require precise measurements, so if you’re a beginner, you might want to make this skirt instead. It’s a little easier.
As always, feel free to share my tutorials and patterns on Pinterest, Twitter, and other social media platforms. I love it when people share my stuff!

This is adorable! Thank you for sharing.
As always, you’re very welcome. And just as a side note, Jeretta, I’ve been hard at work on creating more 6-inch American Girl doll clothes patterns! It won’t be long now!
Oh my I wish this was in 11.5 Barbie size. Adorable, both style and print
I do have shirt and skirt patterns for the 11.5 inch Barbies, but nothing with knife pleats. Here’s a link to the patterns I’ve created so far, for the regular-sized Barbies: https://chellywood.com/2019/02/18/free-sewing-patterns-for-modern-barbies-and-made-to-move-barbie-dolls/
But as I look back over those patterns, I’m noticing that there could be a few more options for long-sleeved shirts for 11.5 inch Barbies. I’ll have to add that to my “to-do” list!
I am very thankful for you Chelly. I can always find something to make for my growing doll collection to make and wear. Also your patterns are so adaptable to create something spectacular for my dolls. Look forward to seeing more in the future.
What a thoughtful comment, Brenda. Thank you for your kind words. ❤️
