See that image? That’s a thing that happened to me over the weekend.
Every time my husband tells me to go buy him a “Whatsit-whoozit” at the hardware store, I always come home with the WRONG item. Then he yells at me, as if I should have known exactly which “Whatsit-whoozit” he meant. So over the weekend, when he had his truck all taken apart, he asked me to buy him rotors at the hardware store. I told him, “No. Buy them yourself.”

I don’t know if you can tell by comparing images 1, 2, and 3 above, but I didn’t follow the instructions when I made this little dress from McCall’s 2970. Instead of clipping around the neckline and sleeves, I created a whole lining for the dress’s bodice.
Ever since I learned how to make alterations as a young seamstress, I find it really difficult to just follow the instructions.
I mean, I usually read the instructions. But then I change things up. I make it my own way. I guess I’m a bit of a rebel.
And yes, the McCall’s 2970 sewing pattern is designed to fit Topper Dawn dolls, Rock Flowers, and many others. But I tried it on my LOL Surprise OMG doll, and look at that! It fits!
When I was a kid, I used to play dolls with my friends. I remember my friend Rachel saying, “You can’t put that dress on Skipper. It’s Dawn’s dress.”
And I’d say, “Yeah, but it fits Skipper.”
Rachel would get really mad at me, like I was committing some sort of fashion doll faux pas. “Yeah, but it’s Dawn’s dress. It’s not Skipper’s.”
“Yeah, but it fits Skipper, so why not?” I would say.
Yes, as you can see, Dawn looks very nice in the View B dress from McCall’s 2970. That’s great. That’s awesome.
But it also fits LOL Surprise! So… why not?
Yeah. I’m a sewing rebel.
Okay. It’s now confession time.
I took pity on my husband and went to buy him those stupid rotors for his truck. But not without standing up for myself first. I mean, when someone does you a favor, you’re not supposed to yell at them. That’s just mean.
And wrong.
And I’m not going to put up with it.
Because I’m a bit of a rebel. How about you?

I have a tendency to use fabric that is not on the suggested list. I made a witch’s dress out of one of those Halloween satin types with moons embossed al over it and not a knit like it called for. But it worked. I checked the pattern pieces first to make sure I wasn’t going to “need” the stretch. It’s been a favorite costume of mine. I love doing stuff like that.

Chelly, I am sorry, but I would not stand for him yelling at me, I would just tell him to go get what ever he needed, TO GO GET IT HIMSELF!
After all you were good enough go and do your best to take time out of whatever you were doing and go for him. He should be THANKFUL you went! What would he do if you weren’t there? I’ve been married for 46 years, I went through that twice, He never yelled at me, but he was”t happy with what I got, so, I just told him to go get it HIMSELF! He got the Message.
Well, thank you for sharing your wise advice. Had I not gotten the silly “rotors” for my husband though, he would have been stuck in a canyon with no way to get home except to walk. So I kind of had to do something to help him out under the circumstances.

As you may remember, I am a foreigner English speaker. Just like my father, who’s an electrical engineer, and an aircraft modeling enthusiast. So, he was subscribed to two or three American aircraft modeling magazines as I grew up. And I started reading them to help me learn English.
I can relate to you. If someone asked me to buy “rotors” for a car or truck in the hardware store, no further explanation, I would be like: “he certainly don’t mean helicopter, or jet engine, or wind power generation rotors, then… oh, sure, my father taught me that an electrical motor, a generator and an alternator are the same thing, working in different directions, or side to side.”
Then I would show up with a rotor for the car’s alternator. Gemini just told me that the disc in the brake, that in Portuguese is called just ‘disc’, is called rotor in English.
I didn’t know that. Cars have a million parts, with a million names, some even have similar names, so how would you know which one he meant? The same car part could be called another name where you grew up.
What is obvious for a person is not always obvious for another one, because they have a different story. It doesn’t hurt to take a few seconds to be sure you and the one who you’re talking to are in the same page.
And yes, when someone does their best to guess what you need, yelling at him or her is simply wrong. Standing up for yourself is not even being rebel, it’s the right thing to do.
