Quite some time ago, I received a request from a lady who, like me, is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (the DAR). She was hoping I could make colonial costumes for GI Joe and Ken dolls.

At the time, I wasn’t able to promise anything to this lady who contacted me, even though I feel deeply passionate about preserving American History, and yes, at some point, I do want to create some colonial costumes for Ken dolls for certain, and maybe GI Joe too.

However I knew I had already created this wonderful pattern for a colonial tricorn hat that would most likely fit GI Joe action figures. So what’s left to do?

Eventually I intend to alter the patterns that you see here, re-sizing them to fit Ken:

As far as making colonial clothes for male dolls and action figures, that task will be on hold for some time, just because I have other project obligations I need to take care of for now. However, eventually, I will get to those outfits too. In fact, I’m really excited about it!

In the mean time, if you’d like to make these patterns for Ken, I recommend that you sign up for my “How to Alter Doll Clothes Patterns” course. You — yes YOU — could turn the patterns I’m offering today into a colonial costume for Ken dolls, by simply using my re-sizing formula and some of the additional alteration techniques I teach in my Creative Spark online course.

And I’ve got a new Creative Spark course coming soon, in which I teach people how to design their own doll pants and overalls. Click on the links I’ve provided, and sign up for the Creative Spark newsletter, if you’d like to learn more. They should start advertising my new course this month, or at the very latest, in February.

To make a colonial or pirate costume for Ever After High, Monster High, or other small-bodied dolls (see list below), you’ll need craft felt for a hat, vest, and shoes, tiny buckles for the shoes, white cotton fabric for a shirt, and tan cotton fabric for the pants.

Please note that the shoes are snug fit on Monster High and Ever After High dolls, so it might behoove you to cut them slightly bigger than the pattern or use very stretchy felt.

Today’s pattern will fit these dolls:
