The image shows the Chelly Wood doll driving an old car. She has her grey hair pinned back in a checkered gingham scarf as she toodles down the highway.

As some of you know, I’ve been on vacation. But I’m back home now, and I’m working on getting caught up.

While on vacation, I checked my email from time to time, and I received one that was about making bibbed overalls for Barbie. This is actually a question I’ve been asked before, so I thought I’d share the contents of my email response with all of you.

The Chelly Wood doll (a Spin Master Liv doll that has been re-designed to look like the real doll clothing designer, Chelly Wood) is seated at her desk in her office. The wall of the office is a mottled purple color behind her open laptop. The doll's fingers touch the keyboard which is resting on an extended arm of the desk. Her computer screen shows the ChellyWood.com "Share Your Creations" page with three doll clothes displays under the introductory text. The ChellyWood.com logo appears in the lower left corner of the image.

I know of three Barbie sewing patterns that come with overalls. They’re all available on eBay as used patterns. Their alphanumeric identifications are Simplicity 7210, Simplicity 5637, and Simplicity S8865.

The most fashionable of these is probably Simplicity 7210, but it’s also the most difficult one to find as an uncut pattern.

For anyone who’s not sure why buying an uncut pattern is important, you might want to read my article entitled, “Tips for Buying Used Doll Clothes Patterns on eBay.”

An image from the McCalls 4716 doll clothes pattern envelope accompanies a graphic of denim overalls with tiny floral red embroidery on the bib. The text reads "Barbie overalls?" The Chelly Wood dot com logo is in the lower right corner of this image. McCalls 4716 is designed primarily for Sunshine Family dolls, but there's a second set of patterns in this envelope that include patterns for Ken and Barbie. And well, let’s also address this question… Is there an overalls pattern that will fit Ken?

There’s a little known fact about McCall’s 4716 (pictured above and below). While the 8 to 9 inch Sunshine Family dolls are pictured on the envelope of this set of patterns, it also includes an overalls pattern to fit Ken and a number of pioneer-style patterns that will fit Barbie too!

I think it’s likely that the smaller wardrobe set of these patterns will also fit modern Stacie dolls (from the Barbie family of dolls), as she’s in the 8 to 9 inch size range as well.

McCall's 4716, as discussed at chellywood.com (free doll clothes sewing pattern website). Left section shows all outfits offered by the pattern. Top row, left to right: overalls with check shirt and scarf; Native American style fringe-trimmed leather jacket with jeans; puffy vest, turtleneck, and trousers; check shirt with pants and scarf. Middle row, left to right: collared blouse with long skirt and apron; collared shirt with long ruffled sleeves, over which a shawl has been crisscrossed and a long skirt with ruffle; pinafore style long dress over collared shirt; cape with hood. Third row (bottom row), left to right: baby diaper; baby bunting; neck scarf; shawl. To the left of these drawings of the various outfits, Steve and Steffie and their little baby are pictured wearing the handmade overalls, check shirt with scarft, collared shirt, pinafore dress and a blue denim apron; and the baby bunting, respectively. The title of the pattern is "Carefree Patterns from McCall's 4716" and the price is listed as one dollar and twenty-five cents, with a Canadian amount at $1.35. The envelope also says "envelope contains all sizes."

I own the McCall’s 4716 patterns, but I haven’t experimented with them yet. Once I do, I’ll probably write an article for my Monday blog posts declaring which 8 inch dolls will fit this overalls pattern. I’m hopeful maybe it will fit Bratz, Breyer Riders, and with some alterations, perhaps even LOL Surprise OMG dolls.

For anyone who wishes they could design their own overalls pattern — maybe you own a doll that there just aren’t many patterns for — you should really look into my “Design Your Own pants Patterns from Scratch” course on the C&T Publishing website. It teaches you how to design all different kinds of doll pants, including overalls, with examples for small dolls, big dolls, fashion dolls, plush dolls, and baby dolls.

In the photo, three different types of dolls are pictured, and each is modeling overalls. On the left, an eight inch Vogue Ginny doll wears a pair of green overalls with tiny white stars. She's hugging the leg of 15 and a half inch vintage Ideal Velvet, who models a pair of red bell-bottom overalls. To Velvet's right, a JC Toys Lil' Cutesies 8 inch baby doll is wearing a pair of white overalls with multi-colored stars.
