Looking back at 2023, did you accomplish your sewing goals? #Goals #2023

This image shows Chelly Wood's sewing goals printable digital sewing planner sheet, filled out with Chelly's goals for 2023. Beside the image of the goal sheet is a hot pink text that says hashtag goals!

It’s always a good idea to look back at what you’ve accomplished at the end of a year, and for today’s blog post, I’m asking everyone to leave a comment.

Did you set any sewing goals? If so, what were they?

And did you accomplish them? Please leave a comment. Let’s hear what each of us was able to sew and create and craft over the course of a year.

Take a moment to read what other people write too, as other people’s accomplishments may inspire your own goals for next year! — In the past they have often inspired my own.

The image shows the Chelly Wood doll (really a Spin Master Liv doll that has had her hair died and her face repainted to look like the real doll clothing designer, Chelly Wood) staring at the camera over the top of her lowered glasses. The photo is superimposed over a swatch of turquoise blue linen fabric with the word "hashtag goals" over the top of the photo. In the lower left corner, we see the ChellyWood.com logo.

However, looking over my list of sewing goals for 2023, I have to say that I’m feeling a bit melancholy.

As some of you may recall, I started 2023 off really strong. I had found a Judy Littlechap doll at my local GoodWill store for a mere $2.50. She was in fantastic condition, and I made plans to create an entire wardrobe for her.

A Judy Littlechap doll models a handmade doll dress while standing beside a vintage Tressy doll clothes sewing pattern (Simplicity 5731 Tressy Wardrobe). the dress Judy wears is made of red felt for the bodice, red cotton/polyester blend for the skirt, and has a ribbon tied at the waist with a front bow. The doll also wears matching red felt flat shoes.

And then… I got sick.

And I got sicker.

And I got even sicker than that.

Until I landed in the hospital with West Nile virus.

I was actually really, REALLY sick when I posted this image:

Text at the top of the image says "on the mend" and behind the photo at the center of this image, we see tiny flowers strung together, a silk flower, and various color blocks. The photo shows a woman's hand draping down from a hospital bed. The hand has an IV taped to it. This is not an actual photo of Chelly Wood's hand, but very representative of what she was going through as she searched for a diagnosis for her illness. She spent two days in the emergency room before it was discovered that she has West Nile Virus. The heading "on the mend" is hopeful, as are the flowers. Please keep doll clothing designer and YouTuber Chelly Wood in your thoughts and prayers as she recovers from this deadly virus.

I was just finishing up a college course offered through PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) and Idaho State University, and if I didn’t finish that college coursework, my job as a school librarian would be in jeopardy because my re-certification was coming up.

So this website got put on hold.

And my sewing goals got put on hold.

Pretty much everything got put on hold, while I focused on only one goal… to finish my PBS Media course.

I used my Sewing Goals sheet (the one that you can buy in my Etsy store) to reflect this:

In greyscale, ribbon banners list the sewing goals of Chelly Wood for 2023, including a) convert all Ken doll clothes patterns to PDF; b) update thumbnails on old videos that are in my top 10 on YouTube; c) re-design my "shop" page to include linkable images as a gallery, using affiliate marketing; d) create shorts once a week, using the "DoApick" theme; e.) something has been blacked out here, and Chelly has written in red, "finish PBS Media course"; e) Design a wardrobe for Sindy with an option to print on international paper sizes; f) earn $5,000 by year's end, as a net profit; g) sell handmade goods, dolls I'm not using, and props I don't need; h) give to a charity that makes a positive difference in the world; i) cut ties with ZenBusiness.

Notice the big crossed out area? That was Judy Littlechap’s wardrobe goal.

But I did get the PBS Media certification done, which was a whopper of a goal. So yay, I guess.

The graphic shows an 18 inch doll lifting up a tiny 8 inch doll, and the American Girl doll uses a speech bubble to say "YAY!" while confetti jumps around the speech bubble joyfully. In the photo of the two dolls, each wears a matching pair of green overalls and a white tee-shirt, so the 18 inch American Girl doll's outfit matches the 8 inch vintage Vogue Ginny doll's outfit. Beside these images is a computer screen with the overlapping text "new" and "course" is written beneath the computer screen. The Chelly Wood dot com logo appears in the lower left corner, and the URL for finding the course on the Creative Spark online learning platform appears at the top of the image.

I was able to get a start on some of the other projects over the course of 2023, but the only actual sewing-related goal that got accomplished was “Cut ties with ZenBusiness.” The ZenBusiness app had been handling my LLC status, but it was costing me more money than this little website can afford.

So I nixed that expense, which is a very good thing.

However I definitely didn’t make $5,000! In fact, as I typed this paragraph, I laughed out loud because, well, maybe that was just a really silly goal anyway.

The image shows the ChellyWood doll with a humorous face. Her tongue is sticking out, and she wears a huge smile. There's a dialog bubble above her head that says L O L with an exclamation point.

I think my goals for 2024 are going to look really different. I’m going to set goals that have more to do with my happiness and less to do with earning money and gaining followers.

I look back at the goals I set while I was sick with West Nile virus, and I really like how these goals look and feel…

A swirly cursive text says, "super basic goals" over the top of a scrap of paper, upon which is written these four goals: get healthy; sew a few things by hand; learn how to set up a shopping tool on my website; read a book or two. Photos representing each of these goals show a.) a street sign connecting the street called "healthy" to the street called "life," b.) a woman's hands stitching a button onto fabric, a laptop open to a shopping page, and a stack of books. These are Chelly Wood's simple, basic goals to achieve while she recovers from West Nile Virus.

Yeah, I think my New Year’s resolutions should be simply stated and full of peppermint tea happiness like that.

Watch for my upcoming goals for 2024 on Friday’s blog post.

And in the meantime, I look forward to hearing how your sewing goals went in 2023. Hopefully you had more successes than I did!

The images show thread spools, a stack of felt, folded fabrics, and a clipboard upon which is a drawing of a dress. Next to the clipboard is a pencil. These are things Chelly Wood has toyed around with doing, as she recovers from West Nile Virus.

  1. I’ve gotten more use out of my Serger by practicing making Barbie clothes! I absolutely love your videos and instruction! Prayers for a happy and healthy 2024!

  2. Hmm. Let’s see. 4 days left to the year and I’m not even close to meeting my goals. LOL Maybe I need to set them lower next year. Happy New Year, Chelly!
