This week on ChellyWood.com, we’re going to sew a pair of capris for 9-inch (23 cm) dolls like my Soul doll, from the World of Love doll collection from Hasbro.
Soul was my very favorite doll when I was a kid, but I didn’t own her. My cousin, Virginia, did–and I was terribly jealous! Every time we got together to play dolls, I would ask, “Can I be ‘Soul‘ today?”
Although she’s not fully articulated, there were a few unique features about this doll that made her absolutely perfect: first, she had a twist-and-turn waist. Back in the 1970’s this was kind of unusual.
Secondly, she had a real Afro! I loved her natural hair, which curled into tight, kinky curls like real African American hair. Again, this was extremely unusual for dolls of that era.
Finally, I loved the features of her face. Her expression wasn’t too smiley or fake; instead, it was an everyday expression but absolutely stunning! She had long eyelashes, pretty lips, and delicate features.
Unfortunately, my doll’s face has been repainted, so the eyes aren’t as pretty as they once were and the lips have lost their color and could use a little re-paint too.
