Glossary of Sewing Terms with Pictures: What does boot cut jeans mean? #SewingChat #SewingVocabulary

On the left, we see a graphic of a pair of jeans with a pair of boots peeping out from under the flared bottom half of the jeans. Beside these, we see a pair of winter boots with lacings up the front and fleece at the top. They are the exact same color as the ones peeping out from under the jeans graphic's hem. A definition for "boot cut" is stated as follows on the graphic image: "A pair of pants or jeans that flare from the knee to the hem, allowing room for a pair of boots under them." Above the winter boots, there are three sets of legs, shown from the calf down, and each of them wears jeans with pink cowboy boots worn beneath the jeans. To the left of this image (between the pink cowboy boots and the graphic of the jeans) silhouettes of cowgirls show them in pants with significantly flared legs, having a flare from the knee down. One cowgirl is shown in profile while the other is shown face-forward, so the boots are clearly shown as hidden beneath the pant legs of the two cowgirl silhouettes. In the far right lower corner, two African American cowgirls sport snug fitting jeans with cowboy boots under the slight flare of their jeans. One of these cowgirls leans against a fencepost. They both wear cowboy hats and western shirts.

A light blue denim pocket has been embroidered on all sides with a double-stitch pink thread, and in the middle of the pocket an irregular letter W has been embroidered across the face of the pocket. The Chelly Wood dot com logo appears on the right of the pocket.

Well, you might wonder, What’s the difference between bell bottom jeans and boot cut jeans? In my humble opinion, the only real difference is in the western vs. non-western styling between the two.

If the jeans are being marketed as “boot cut,” they’re likely going to have western style embroidery on the back pocket (see image above) and perhaps on the side stitching as well. It’s not different from a bell bottom jean in terms of how they fit; it’s only different in that, when someone buys them under a sign that says “boot cut,” they’re probably wanting a pair of western jeans that fit over a pair of cowboy boots.

I live out west, in Idaho (USA), and I’ve noticed that at my D&B Supply (a store that specializes in cowboy western wear, along with supplies for horses and other livestock), their bell bottom jeans are labeled “boot cut jeans” on the signs overhead.

But if you go to Kohls, out at the mall, the same style of jeans are marketed as “bell bottoms” on their racks (or sometimes “flared jeans”). Same jeans, different group of people buying them.

DISCUSSION QUESTION: What are your thoughts? Do “boot cut” jeans have the exact same fit as a pair of bell bottom jeans, but with a more western look to the stitching? Or am I just imagining that?

  1. IMHO…bells are defintely different than boot cut. Bells flare a lot more than a boot cut. The leg is much more fitted to the knee. Boot cut has a looser leg, and flare slightly. Bells look like a bell. From one of your original bell bottom wearers.

      1. I think that bell bottoms are a bit wider than boot cut. I also remember way back the elephant bell. Hope all is good with your.
