Sew a Fez for Ken, a Pillbox Hat for Barbie, or a Barrel-shaped Hat for 8 inch Dolls w/free patterns @ ChellyWood.com

This video first came out when I was working on the stop-motion video of Romeo and Juliet with Dolls.

I still haven’t finished putting together Act V of that video, largely because my girls were my inspiration, and now that they’re all grown up and have moved away, I’m feeling less inspired. I’ll get it done anyway; just be patient, and it will happen.

In the meantime, I’m re-posting this early pattern from the production along with a revised and updated version of the original video. That’s a Hasbro World of Love Soul doll, who plays Benvolio in the production.

I first designed the hat for Benvilio, and it fit the World of Love dolls nicely.

Imagine my surprise, though, when I realized that this hat pattern also fit Barbie as a pillbox hat and Ken as a fez! (See images below…)

In a dining room, with a large china hutch behind them, we see a male and female African or African American doll couple standing in peaceful ambiance. They wear clothing in bright African prints and pretty solids. The male doll (a Texas A and M Ken doll) wears a green geometric print shirt with a yellow and green and black African print hat. The deep yellow of his trousers match the yellow in his hat. The female doll, which is a "Photographer" doll made by Lammily LLC, wears a red shiny skirt with a red felt shirt, and an African print yellow and green and red and black poncho over the top. Her poncho is trimmed in yellow fringe. Behind them on the wall is a famous painting of the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral. Their dining room furniture is made of tan wicker.

Also, please note that these older hand-drawn patterns don’t show a seam allowance, but like many of my modern patterns, there’s a 4 mm seam allowance embedded in the design. You don’t need to cut a seam allowance in addition to the pattern itself.

If you want to make the fez, instead of flannel, use a bit of basic cotton fabric which is also what I recommend if you want to make a pillbox hat for Barbie.

If you’re not sure what I mean by a pillbox hat, have a look at this one, which was made from felt without the foam insert (a design that also works well):

Here we see a close-up of a Mattel Barbie's face. She's wearing a pillbox hat, made of felt, which was sewn using the Simplicity 7601 doll clothes pattern. This lovely Barbie has pale pink lipstick, what might be considered an olive complexion or perhaps a Mediterranean complexion, light brown eyes, and blond, curly hair. The pillbox hat rests gently over her curls, and the felt the hat is made from is a pale purple, almost lilac color. The hat is tipped slightly over her right eye. The coat she wears is barely seen in the image, but it too, is made of the lilac felt. The Chelly Wood dot com logo appears in the lower left corner.
