Sew a pair of underpants for vintage Ideal Tammy doll with today’s free panties /lingerie patterns #Sewing #Lingerie

A vintage Ideal Tammy doll with strawberry blond hair models a pair of handmade underpants/panties/knickers/bloomers made of jersey fabric with a picot elasticized elastic waistband and a flannel tank top /vest summer top with straps made of white flannel decorated in tiny pink flowers of a vintage style. The doll is seen from the front, where we can tell the underwear is high-waisted in a briefs style.

Well… If you read yesterday’s blog post, then you’ve already seen pretty much everything I’m posting today. However, I will need a page that links from the Tammy doll clothes pattern gallery to the underwear patterns for Tammy.

You might say, “But Sindy’s underwear page has the exact same patterns!” and you would be absolutely right (see images below, showing both Sindy and Tammy in the same underpants). When people navigate from the gallery page to the underwear pattern page, though, they get really confused if they aren’t aware that Sindy and Tammy can wear a lot of the same patterns.

On the left, Pedigree Sindy (brunette) models a pair of handmade underpants and a handmade tank top or undershirt. To her right, a doll with a very similar face, namely an Ideal Tammy doll (identical to early versions of Pedigree Sindy) also models a pair of white underpants and a tank top or undershirt. Sindy's legs are slightly smaller in circumference than Tammy's; Sindy's arms also have a more natural looking shape than Tammy's stiffer looking, slightly shorter arms. And finally, Sindy is a bit shorter than Tammy with what appears to be a slightly smaller waist. Both dolls have side-glancing eyes that look to their left, and their faces have a similar mold. However Sindy's legs are held wider apart due to a different, more articulated joint at the hip, and Sindy can stand with her torso twisted a bit, due to the fact that she has a joint there, which the early version of Sindy and Ideal Tammy do not have. Furthermore, Sindy's neck is attached fully to her torso, while Tammy's neck is attached to her head, having an unusual joint where the neck meets the torso. The ChellyWood.com logo appears in one corner of this image. Atop the image, it says, "ChellyWood.com," and at the bottom is an advertisement that says, "Are you looking for a pattern with a slightly different design? So today’s blog post highlights Ideal Tammy all by herself.

A vintage Ideal Tammy doll is seen from the back, modeling handmade underwear / underpants / panties / knickers / bloomers made of white cotton jersey fabric along with a white a pink strappy pajama top. The back view shows that the bloomers pattern / underpants pattern covers her posterior area fully, with a briefs-style high waistband and hemmed leg holes that fully extend to the doll's hips. The flannel strappy vest or summer top night shirt that she wears closes at the back with snaps.

To make today’s underpants for your Ideal Tammy dolls, you will need some jersey fabric and a swatch of 1/4 inch wide (6 mm wide) picot lingerie elastic. For your jersey fabric, you can use an old tee shirt, as long as it has a fair amount of stretch to it.

To make the reversible summer top (vest/tank top), you’ll need cotton solid fabric, cotton small-print fabric, and some size 3/0 Dritz snaps.

I actually made my summer top out of vintage flannel, but looking back, I don’t recommend that. It was too thick. I think the all-cotton top that I made for Sindy looks a lot nicer, less bulky.

On the left, either a vintage Ideal Tammy doll or an identical Pedigree Sindy doll from the early 1960's models handmade knickers (panties/underpants) and a handmade vest (tank top). To her right, we see a newer (1980's or 1970's) Pedigree Sindy modeling the same knickers but a different vest/tank top/ strappy lingerie. There are four photos, showing the two dolls from different angles: front, back, sideways, and 3/4 turned away from the viewer. The Pedigree Sindy on the right has chestnut brown hair while the Sindy/ Tammy doll on the left has strawberry blonde hair. All photos show the dolls barefoot.

Take a look at the straps in the images above, and I think you’ll agree. The all-cotton top that Sindy is modeling has straps that lay flat against her shoulders, while Tammy’s flannel ones pop out above her shoulders sort of weirdly.

In my underpants DIY video, I also mention Fiskars’ Stitchers for snipping around corners. They’re an incredibly helpful tool!

The image shows a pair of ReNew scissors Micro-Tip scissors on a cardboard packaging that has the recycle symbol on it. The text under the brand name says, "recycle blade and handle."

To honor the trademark rights of the doll companies mentioned in this blog post, I am including links to their websites here. Please feel free to visit their website and consider purchasing one or more of the dolls mentioned.

Queens of Africa dolls are products offered by the Slice by Cake company, which holds the trademark for them (™). They were designed by Taofick Okoya. Please visit the Queens of Africa website to learn more about their company and its trademarked toys, books, and fashions.

Barbie, MTM Barbie, Tall Barbie, and Vintage Barbie dolls are products offered by Mattel, which holds the registered trademark for them (™). Please visit the Mattel Toys website to learn more about their company and its trademarked toys.

Liv dolls were products designed and distributed by the Spin Master company, which still makes dolls and toys today (although the Liv dolls are no longer in production at the time of this blog post). The Spin Master company held the trademark for the Liv Dolls (™). Please visit the Spin Master Toys and Games website to learn more about their company and its trademarked toys and games. Please be aware that the Chelly Wood animated doll is a Spin Master Liv doll that has been re-painted and had its wig colored to appear to look like the real doll clothing designer, Chelly Wood. This was done as a creative project by Chelly’s daughters, and the Spin Master Toys and Games company was not involved in the doll’s makeover in any way.

Sindy dolls were originally created by Pedigree Dolls & Toys, but they have been made by other manufacturers including Hasbro, Vivid Imaginations, and New Moon. Currently (at the time of this blog post) a limited number of the newest version of these dolls is being manufactured by Kid Kreations of Staffordshire, England. I haven’t tried my doll clothes on this newer version, but sewists have told me my Tammy doll patterns do fit the vintage Sindy dolls created by Pedigree Dolls & Toys. Please visit one of these toy companies’ websites to learn more about the toys they produce. The Sindy dolls are trademarked and as such, it should be noted that Chelly Wood and ChellyWood.com are not affiliated with either Pedigree or Kid Creations.  However Chelly has enjoyed designing doll clothes that will fit these dolls along with others in a similar size range…

Ideal Toy Company owned the registered trademark for the entire Tammy family of dolls, but that company is no longer in business. I’m including links to the Wikipedia pages on these topics for anyone who would like to research these dolls.
