This video first came out when I was working on the stop-motion video of Romeo and Juliet with Dolls.

I still haven’t finished putting together Act V of that video, largely because my girls were my inspiration, and now that they’re all grown up and have moved away, I’m feeling less inspired. I’ll get it done anyway; just be patient, and it will happen.

In the meantime, I’m re-posting this early pattern from the production along with a revised and updated version of the original video. That’s a Hasbro World of Love Soul doll, who plays Benvolio in the production.

I first designed the hat for Benvilio, and it fit the World of Love dolls nicely.

Imagine my surprise, though, when I realized that this hat pattern also fit Barbie as a pillbox hat and Ken as a fez! (See images below…)

Also, please note that these older hand-drawn patterns don’t show a seam allowance, but like many of my modern patterns, there’s a 4 mm seam allowance embedded in the design. You don’t need to cut a seam allowance in addition to the pattern itself.

If you want to make the fez, instead of flannel, use a bit of basic cotton fabric which is also what I recommend if you want to make a pillbox hat for Barbie.

If you’re not sure what I mean by a pillbox hat, have a look at this one, which was made from felt without the foam insert (a design that also works well):
