Description

Webster’s online dictionary defines satin as “a fabric in a warp-effect or filling-effect satin weave, as acetate, rayon, nylon, or silk, often having a glossy face and a soft, slippery texture.” However, my satin remnants are hand-me-down bits and pieces that a novice sewist gave me after several attempts to make herself an A-line skirt failed.

As such, I can’t tell if the satin was made of rayon, nylon, silk, or something else, since I never got to read the end of the bolt she bought this fabric from.

Furthermore, these remnants, while offering plenty of fabric to work with, do have occasional flaws. She used a fabric pencil and/or fabric marker in places and those marks still exist here and there on some of the remnants. Also I have found snags in the remnant pieces in spots.

When making doll clothes, though, these snags and marks can be avoided, and as I’ve said, there’s plenty of fabric to work with in these remnants.

Note the sticky notes I’ve placed in the photos, so you can tell what shape each remnant comes in, and so you can see which remnants definitely have noticeable snags or fabric marker spots. I want to make sure I’m being open and honest here!

These irregularities are shown in my image gallery.

With that said, let me say that I was surprised how little this fabric frayed when I worked with it! Satin is pretty slippery and usually frays when you’re working with it, so when I made my dress for Judy Littlechap, I chose to sew the whole thing by hand.

But you can see, in the photos on my tutorial video for the Judy Littlechap pink satin dress, that the garment pieces show very little fray. I loved that about this satin fabric!

If there’s a specific remnant you want me to send you, please leave a comment specifying which one you want (see bulleted list below). Check the comments to make sure your favorite has not already been claimed!

  • Pink Satin Remnant 1A weighs 2 ounces and is shaped like two mountain peaks.
  • Pink Satin Remnant 2B weights 2 ounces and is shaped like a very long A-line skirt, but has some minor snags and fabric pencil/fabric marker lines along the cut edges.
  • Pink Satin Remnant 3C weighs a whoppin’ 4 ounces, but it has been sewn around the edges. You could seam rip the existing stitches, but there’s plenty of fabric to work with here, without having to seam rip it. It’s also shaped like a long A-line skirt.
  • Pink Satin Remnant 4D weighs 2.3 ounces, has some snags, and there are more than half a dozen areas of discoloration from fabric markers. These discolored areas are about the size of a dime or nickel. It’s also shaped like a long A-line skirt, with quite a bit of usable fabric, in spite of the stains.
  • Pink Satin Remenant 5E weighs 2 ounces. It consists of two triangular remnants that are big enough to cut the Judy Littlechap dress’s skirt from, as well as a smaller triangular remnant and one very long skinny remnant piece that would be useful for many doll bodice pieces, as well as Barbie-sized skirts.
