#TapeMeasureTuesday: How does the 6″ Mini American Girl doll measure up against Barbie?

Recently ChellyWood.com received a comment from blog follower “PlayScaleTheater,” asking if the 6-inch American Girl Mini dolls looked like they would fit in 1:6 scale dioramas with Barbie dolls.

So today’s #TapeMeasureTuesday offers both the measurements for the little 6″ AG dolls, and a couple of photos showing the six-inch American Girl dolls with the Made to Move Barbie.

First, let’s take a look at my 6″ American Girl doll‘s official measurements for sewing purposes:

  • Neck circumference… 5.3 cm
  • Neck to shoulder seam… 1.9 cm
  • Bust 9.6 cm
  • Collar to true waist… 3.5 cm
  • Underarm to true waist… 1.6 cm
  • Sleeve inseam (underarm to cuff)… 4.4 cm
  • Sleeve from shoulder seam to cuff… 4.5 cm
  • Sleeve circumference (upper arm bicep)…  3.7 cm
  • Waist … 9 cm
  • Hip circumference… 9.8 cm
  • Pants inseam (crotch to just below the ankle bone)… 6 cm
  • Pants outseam (waist to just below the ankle bone)… 9 cm
  • Pants leg circumference (upper thigh)… 5.6 cm
  • Height not including hair… 6.5 inches or 16.5 cm

As you can see in the photos, my American Girl Mini doll is also posed next to my Spin Master Liv doll, which has been made-over to look like me:

I think she looks pretty believable in comparison to both Barbie and my Liv doll. However, I think my AG mini‘s feet don’t compare well when you look at them next to Barbie‘s. They do look okay next to the Chelly Wood doll (the Liv doll) though.

Liv dolls have somewhat large heads when compared to their bodies, but I don’t think this looks too bad in a scene with the 6″ AG doll.

Barbie‘s head size doesn’t look too weird when compared to the little American Girl doll either, though.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this topic. What do you think, blog followers? Could the 6″ American Girl doll pass as Barbie‘s six-year-old daughter? Would she be more believable as a Liv doll‘s daughter?

And what age do you think the 6-inch American Girl doll would represent in story-style dioramas?

  1. Yay! And I think she looks better than poor Chelsea has lately. Modern Chelsea looks unhealthily thin to me for a small child. Makes me miss Kelly. But these definitely look like potential substitutes!

  2. would like to see a comparison of the 6″ ag doll and the Barbie Kelly or Chelsea doll both in size and in a photo graph as I some times mix and match patterns for these doll and with a little adjustment they see m to work. What do you think about this? Thanks for all your help and Guidance it is greatly appreciated . GBU Sue

    1. Hey Sue, thanks for the idea! I like the idea of comparing Kelly or Chelsea to the 6″ AG doll. Hopefully when I prepare the upcoming week’s blog posts, I’ll remember we had this conversation here. (I’m kind of forgetful!) If I forget, just remind me with another comment, okay? Thanks!

      1. The important part is the dolls are fully articulated and pose well. I’m a realist height wise and would peg the AG doll slightly younger than 6. But for some reason I’m not a realist at all regarding circumference and the head size doesn’t bother me all. Great scene, thanks for sharing!

      2. The 6″ AG doll is not particularly articulated. Her arms only go up and down, not side to side. Her legs only bend at the hip in the traditional way, leaving her spread-eagle when seated like old-fashioned dolls. On the plus side, she stands on her own quite nicely.
