#SewingBlogger Thursday: #Sew a pair of pants for #BroadKen w/FREE #patterns @ ChellyWood.com

This week I’ve been re-posting links to all the male fashion doll patterns I’ve made and posted over the years, on this blog. I have more in store, of course!

But for today, I’d like to post the patterns and tutorial video for making a pair of elastic-waist trousers (or pajama pants) for Broad Ken and similar-sized action figures.

Now you’ve actually seen this pattern a couple of times before. I first posted it as a “boxer shorts” pattern, and you’ll see that the shorts pattern is included in the downloadable patterns. Here’s an image from that earlier post, to jog your memory:

The image shows the Mattel Fashionista Broad Ken doll wearing a pair of handmade shorts/ Boxers. He stands in front of a Monet painting reminiscent of Starry Night. Beside him are a wicker chair and wicker table. Broad Ken stands barefoot in his argyle shorts with elastic waist. He wears a pair of plastic reading glasses. The overlay says: "ChellyWood.com: free patterns and tutorials" and suggests that if you go to this website, you will (in fact) find free, printable sewing patterns for doll clothes to fit Broad Ken, among other male and female fashion dolls.

I need to also say that GI Joe doesn’t fit in the pants as well as I had hoped. Of course you can alter the length by making a deeper hem on the pants (and that’s certainly what I would recommend), but just look at how long the navy blue pants were on my GI Joe grandpa…

The image shows a Civil War GI Joe doll with beard wearing a pair of hand-made navy blue slacks or trousers. These pants were made using free doll clothes patterns found at ChellyWood.com. The trousers or pants appear to be about 1 cm too long for the doll / action figure.

However I do have another GI-Joe-ish doll / action figure who looks pretty good in these pants:

The image shows an action figure that is similar to GI Joe but a bit taller than GI Joe dolls. He models handmade doll clothes including a pair of elastic-waist pants that were made using a free printable sewing pattern found at ChellyWood.com

Do any of you know the brand name of that action figure shown above? I bought him so long ago, that I’ve actually forgotten what he was called!

He must have a longer inseam than GI Joe, though, because he really fits nicely into these pants!

To my utter surprise, this trousers pattern will also fit regular Ken dolls (although the pants look a bit 1950’s in terms of length). Take a look:

The image shows Texas A & M Ken modeling a short sleeve plaid shirt with yellow buttons down the front and a pair of dapper-looking 1950's style trousers. The pattern for these elastic-waist pants is free and printable at ChellyWood.com

Sorry this is sort of a repeat, in terms of patterns. In spite of that, hopefully my patterns and tutorial video will strike a chord with some of you today.

If not, hang in there! I have lots more patterns in my creative tool belt!

If you love my patterns and want to help fund this site, please share my patterns and tutorials on the social media platform of your choice.

  1. \i am looking for a pattern for Wide Ken to make a bathrobe. If you have one for a Judo Suit I could probably lengthen the Jacket to make a bathrobe pattern that would fit Wide Ken. Thanks for your help.

  2. Thank you so much Chelly. I’m not great at sewing but my grandchildren (who live in the states and I’m in UK) wanted some Barbie and Ken clothes. Thanks to you I have just made my first pair of trousers for Ken. You make it so easy to follow with both patterns and video. I look forward to sewing along with you many more times.

    1. Aww! Thank you for this very thoughtful comment, Lorna!

Be advised though: these are BROAD KEN pants. He’s a little bigger than regular Ken. Hopefully you’re able to find exactly the right doll clothes patterns for your grandchildren’s dolls.

      Blessings and good wishes!
