#Sewing Measurements for Broad Ken #Dolls @ ChellyWood.com

This is a FREE pattern for boxers, summer shorts, basketball shorts, elastic-waist trousers, or pajama pants to fit broad-bodied, muscular action figures and male fashion dolls like Mattel's Broad Ken dolls, GI Joe action figures, and similar-shaped 12-inch male dolls. The pattern includes instructions for seam allowances, a creative-commons attribution symbol, and a measurement tool. There's also instructions for locating the free sewing tutorial videos on YouTube and the URL of the doll clothes patterns website: ChellyWood.com. This is one of many free printable doll clothes patterns found at ChellyWood.com (designed by doll clothing designer, Chelly Wood).

The pattern above (also available here) not only fits GI Joe action figures, but it also fits the new Broad Ken dolls. I recently received a question from one of my followers about the differences between Broad Ken and Original Ken dolls.

This is an important question, because the tinier the doll clothes, the more essential it is to get every inch–or in this case every millimeter–of measurement just right.

Since I had recently taken the dolls’ comparative measurements for this particular follower, I thought I’d share the results with everyone right here. (I hope you don’t mind, Kathy…)

Regular Ken/Ryan Dolls:
  • Neck circumference… 8.5 cm
  • Neck to shoulder seam… 2.5 cm
  • Collar to true waist… 7 cm
  • Underarm to true waist… 4.5 cm
  • Sleeve inseam (underarm to cuff)… 7.5 cm
  • Sleeve from shoulder seam to cuff… 10 cm
  • Sleeve circumference (upper arm bicep)… 5.8 cm
  • Waist… 11.3 cm
  • Pants inseam (crotch to just below the ankle bone)… 14 cm
  • Pants outer leg seam (waist to just below the ankle bone)… 18 cm
  • Pants leg circumference (upper thigh)… 8.5 cm
Broad Ken Doll Measurements:
  • Neck circumference… 8.7 cm
  • Neck to shoulder seam… 3 cm
  • Collar to true waist… 7.5 cm
  • Underarm to true waist… 4.5 cm
  • Sleeve inseam (underarm to cuff)… 7.6 cm
  • Sleeve from shoulder seam to cuff… 10 cm
  • Sleeve circumference (upper arm bicep)…  8.5 cm
  • Waist… 15 cm
  • Pants inseam (crotch to just below the ankle bone)… 13.6 cm
  • Pants outer leg seam (waist to just below the ankle bone)… 17.2 cm
  • Pants leg circumference (upper thigh)… 10 cm
None of these measurements include seam allowances, so please bear that in mind.
You can find the directions for making the shorts shown in my pattern above, at this link, but I’m still processing the pants pattern. They do fit Broad Ken as you can see in the image below, but with a little work, I might be able to make them fit with a more tailored look.
The image shows Mattel's "Broad Ken" doll modeling a pair of plaid pajama pants made with a free printable sewing pattern (like a pdf pattern but using google docs to print the patterns) for pants to fit the broad sized ken dolls. The overlay offers the website where you can find the free printable sewing pattern for these ken doll pants: ChellyWood.com (offering free, printable sewing patterns for dolls of many shapes and sizes).

They look very nice as pajama pants. Also, with an elastic waist, it’s easy for young children to get them on and off the Ken dolls.

However I might lower the waistline a bit more before I finalize this pattern.

This free printable pants pattern for male fashion dolls also fits GI Joe action figures, as you can see below:

The image shows a GI Joe action figure holding a plastic coffee cup and sitting in a metal folding chair in a 1:6 scale office diorama. Behind him is a computer, printer, and other office equipment. This African American GI Joe action figure is seated in a pair of hand-made pajama pants decorated with tiny sailing ships. The pale blue color of the pajama pants matches his plastic coffee cup, which GI Joe holds up as if to take a drink. His posture is very manly, with his legs spread out in a way that shows off his athletic build. These GI Joe pajama pants have an elastic waist, and the free printable sewing pattern for making these pajama pants can be found at ChellyWood.com (the watermark shown on the image).

I really like the sailboats-and-anchors pattern on those pajama pants! But I’m anxious to do more with this pattern, maybe taking it in a bit before creating the tutorial video to go with it.

That’s one of the many projects I want to work on during my Christmas vacation from my day job as a school librarian.
